Handgun Shooting Basics For Women In California

Women And Handgun Shooting California CA

Woman Shotgun ShooterShooting is most definitely a thrilling hobby, as well as a means of protecting oneself. There is an extraordinary adrenaline rush, and a sense of pride, and then you do it over again. It’s incredibly exciting. It’s important that women become comfortable using firearms in California, since guns are some of the best means of protecting themselves against intruders and attackers. One of the best ways to go about turning shooting into a hobby, rather than something strictly for self-defense is to learn about recreational shooting activities in California, There is Practical Shooting; IDPA shooting that simulates self-defense and real life style encounters.

There is Shotgun competitions, Then there is the extremely exciting sport of 3 – Gun Shooting where your shoot a sporting rifle usually built on an AR – platform, a Shotgun, and an semi-auto pistol. There are also; Action, Silhouette, and Precision shooting competitions. If this is not enough there are also several very specific types of shooting competitions where just Rifles and Shotguns are used.

New Women Shooters; Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun: What’s the Difference In California?

Julie, Top Woman CompetitorIt can be a bit confusing to keep these terms separate, especially when you’re in conversation with a gun expert in California who just prattles on and on! When you’re trying to figure out which type of firearm would work best for your home and/or personal self-defense, it’s important to be able to make an informed decision. Here’s a quick run-down to help you out:

A handgun is a firearm designed to be handheld, in either one or both hands. This can be a Pistol (Semi-auto) or a revolver. Handguns are much more suited to home and especially for personal defense. This is what you would carry around during your daily activities if you get a concealed carry permit in California. The barrel is much shorter than both a rifle and shotgun, as it’s designed to be held with one or both hands, rather than placed against your shoulder. Most pistol barrels are grooved in a similar manner to that of rifles.

Rifles and Shotguns for New Women Shooters In California

A rifle is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder, A rifle barrel is long and has thick walls with spiral grooves cut into the bore. This grooved pattern is referred to as “rifling”. This is one of the best guns for shooting recreationally. With the proper training in California and choice of a rifle such as one on an AR – Platform it can be used for both sport and home defense. Rifles are very versatile and it is highly recommended that any woman wanting to learn to shoot a handgun should seriously consider adding a rifle into her training program.

A shotgun (also known as a scattergun and pepper gun,) is a firearm that is usually designed to be fired from the shoulder, which uses the energy of a fixed shell to fire a number of small spherical pellets called shot, or a solid projectile called a slug. The shotgun barrel is long and made of thin steel that is smooth on the inside to allow the shot to glide down the barrel without friction since it doesn’t have to withstand quite as much pressure. It’s similar to that of a rifle barrel. This is good for home defense in California, but be careful of your surroundings. Often, the sound alone of a shotgun “Racking” is formidable enough to make an intruder think twice.

This page outlines just the very basics of the types of firearms in California that may be best suited for you. Happy shooting!

For More Information Pick Your State

California,  is the most populous state in the US, and 21.3% of Californians own guns according to the State of South Carolina's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), which equals about 7.8 million firearms. In 2012 there were a reported 817,738 firearms legally sold by licensed dealers within the state.

There are more gun control laws in California than in any other state, and in 2013 alone a total of 30 new laws are before the state legislature for vote. California Big Sur

All new handguns and long guns must be sold by a licensed dealer and must be certified as "California" legal. California is clearly a liberal state and the legislature for the past 20 years has been on a continual onslaught against individuals and their 2nd amendment rights, and has been openly against all types of firearms. It has become so openly blatant in the states disregard for firearms owners’ rights they have either passed laws or have proposed laws regarding gun control for guns or capabilities that do not even exists!

This behavior is a clear illustration at the legislature’s ignorance on firearms and their unrestrained frenzy to try and legislate all firearms out of the state. Even if one goes to the states own website(s) you cannot find all the of the different firearms related laws, it is as if there is an overt intent by the state to make it difficult for its citizenry to research all of the laws.

California is the only state that has a “Gun Squad” that’s only purpose is to go out into the community and confiscate guns from those that are supposedly in possession of the guns illegally. The interesting issue is that because of the continual changes in the laws, and new laws being passed the individual who LEGALLY possessed a gun today could quite possibly be in violation of the law tomorrow, and yes this IS happening right now in the state!

San Francisco CaliforniaAs a result of the state’s continual erosion of the 2nd amendment rights the state is being flooded by lawsuits which will no doubt cost the state 10’s of millions in legal fees.  Of special note is that the passage of all of California’s firearms control laws have had no real impact on criminal activity, it is apparent that the criminals in the state are unaffected by unconstitutional gun control laws.

California,  firearms laws are not only the most numerous of any state in the U.S. they are also the most restrictive, selective, regulated, and as time will tell will probably be found to be the most unconstitutional. Granted, some of the laws are needed and are just laws enacted for the protection of Law Enforcement officers, the state’s natural resources in fish and game, and the general public, and should stay in place.

It is the massive number and what appears to be the never ending stream of new and ever more restrictive laws that are causing many to be concerned with the disregard for the language in the U.S. Constitution on the 2nd amendment, and an individual’s rights to possess and bear arms that “Shall not be infringed”.  No doubt that California’s firearms laws are being closely watched by the anti-gun movement, pro-gun groups, and those that interpret the meaning of the U.S. Constitution.California Sequoia Trees

California and New York are becoming the battleground states in regards to individual rights under the 2nd amendment. The pro-gun community is starting to fight back and be heard. Several counties and individual elected Sheriffs have started to take a formal stand against the state firearms laws in that they have made public and official statements opposing the states actions and in some cases open defiance by stating that within their respective jurisdictions they will NOT enforce laws they deem to be unconstitutional. Where this gets interesting is that per state law the Sheriff is the highest ranking law officer in any county. All are wondering where this courageous stand will end. It will no doubt be in the courts for some time to come.

Some of the unforeseen consequences that the legislature did not anticipate is that they have made it difficult for the state’s law enforcement agencies to get their duty and emergency teams (SWAT) guns serviced and or repaired as many gun manufactures in protest to the laws have sent formal letters to the state advising that since they have either been forced out or will be forced out of the state will not service any firearms currently in the possession of thousands of California’s law enforcement officers.

The newest law of “Micro Stamping” on shell casing will in effect make all new handgun sales of auto pistols illegal in the very near future! It is time for the citizens of California to say enough!
