Effort Includes Full-Page Letter to Rep. Coffman in Today’s Denver Post From Colorado Resident Whose Sister Was the School Psychologist Killed At Sandy Hook School
DENVER – Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, the political arm of the country’s largest gun violence prevention organization, and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown, today announced the launch of a six-figure advertising effort calling attention to Rep. Mike Coffman’s support for “Concealed Carry Reciprocity,” the National Rifle Association’s top priority in Congress which may be called for a floor vote as early as Wednesday.
“Concealed Carry Reciprocity” – S.446 and H.R. 38 – is a chaotic and dangerous policy that would gut state gun laws and make Colorado communities less safe. Right now, every state sets its own standards for who can carry a hidden, loaded handgun in public, and Colorado’s standards include obtaining a permit and completing safety training. But concealed carry reciprocity would force each state to recognize the concealed carry standards of every other state, including those states that have dramatically weaker standards, or no standards at all.
The effort announced today includes a letter in today’s Denver Post from Colorado resident Jane Dougherty, whose sister, Mary Sherlach, was the brave school psychologist murdered trying to save her students at Sandy Hook School. “As we remember the lives taken at Sandy Hook Elementary School five years ago, you have a chance to be brave like my sister and do something that will protect communities in Colorado and every other state by voting against this dangerous legislation,” Dougherty writes in the letter, a copy of which is included below.
Facebook ads, copies of which are also included below, are also going live today with the message: “Congressman Mike Coffman Doesn’t Care about Gun Safety.” Radio and digital ads will also be included in the effort.
More information about concealed carry reciprocity is available here, and Everytown has also created an interactive map that allows users to compare state standards.
